IGCSE Portfolio
Year 2019-2020
Coursework

This page is my initial exploration where I wrote about the painting which inspired to take up this topic. I further explored with a mind map made out of bubbles, a mood board with pictures and sketches based on my mind map.

Exploration with observational drawings of transparent objects with photography, and artworks with black and white mediums.

This page is dedicated for the planning towards the final piece. I laid out the photos I edited to use, material I need and the smaller version of what my actual work will look like.

For my 8 page coursework, I chose the topic of transparent.
I have incorporated a lot of observational drawings and photographs of different aspects like objects, expressions and animals.

This topic was difficult for me since it took quite a while to brainstorm for creative ideas, but I am glad my final composition turned out successful.
Final composition

This is my final composition using mix media on A3 watercolour paper. There are 4 aspects of "transparent" I have included here: object, distortion, Jellyfish and expression.

The vase I drew with the bright green plant is done with Indian ink to get the gradient grey effect, having some areas lighter than the other to represent the reflection of water in it. The plant is done with gouache.

The figure with her head on the table was inspired by the artist Jinyoung I had previously studied and done with acrylic for the face and watercolour for the glass.

The tallest figure in the background is a self portrait with a watercolour jellyfish on my head. I have a surprised expression to represent transparent emotions I studied in my coursework. This was done with acrylics.

The background was done with a sheet of bubble wrap with blue acrylic applied on top, and pressed onto the paper to create a print effect.
Exam portfolio

I chose the topic of "Rush hour" so I started of by making a collage of different areas during its busiest times. I made 4 artworks using black and white mediums paired with coloured ones for a contrasting effect. I also did a collage with the work on the top right using newspaper for the skin of the hand.

I further explored some aspects of rush hour in details, like traffic jam, packed public transport, restaurant kitchen during its busiest hour, and a crowded shoal of fish swimming. I used a lot of coloured mediums like watercolour, acrylic, gouache and pastels.

This page is dedicated to collecting all my ideas together for the final composition. I printed first-hand photos I would like to take reference from and made pencil sketches to map out my drawing. Sadly due to lockdown we could not do our final exam piece.

For this 4 page portfolio, I chose the topic of "Rush hour" from the list my exam board gave. I explored the ideas of rush hours in the sense of humans, transportations, and animals. I took a lot of photos of traffic, crowds, public transports, shoal of fish at an aquarium to do my artworks.
I really enjoyed doing this topic as it was straightforward and fairly easy to come up with drawing ideas. Luckily I got all the resources I need before going into quarantine as all my photographs were taken outside.
Our art class didn't get to finish our final composition as school became online and we weren't in exam conditions at home. Nonetheless I am still satisfied with how my work was all put together.
